When it rained, water poured straight into the classrooms of LEA Primary School, Bmuko. When the sun was high, there was no roof left to offer shade. The zinc sheets covering the school had torn and worn through in multiple places, leaving pupils exposed to the elements no matter the weather. Teachers had resorted to relocating classes to another building just to keep lessons running, a stopgap that left an already-strained school stretched even thinner.

For the school’s head teacher and principal, it had become a source of real frustration: watching pupils’ learning suffer year after year, with no resources in sight to fix it. It was a quiet crisis — the kind that rarely makes headlines, but that shapes a child’s entire relationship with school for years to come.

This was exactly the kind of gap our STEDAS programme exists to close.

MOBILIZING A RESPONSE

Once the condition of the school came to our attention, The Bawa Foundation moved quickly. A flyer was designed and circulated, calling on well-meaning individuals and partners to contribute toward restoring the roof. The response was heartening; donors stepped forward, moved by the images and the story of children being taught in an environment no child should have to endure.

The project was estimated at ₦1.5 million. Through careful planning and prudent execution, the Foundation ultimately delivered the entire roofing project for ₦1.48 million, coming in under budget without cutting corners on quality.

SIX DAYS THAT CHANGED A SCHOOL

Working hand in hand with the school’s head teacher and the community chief, the Foundation engaged a contractor, procured new roofing materials and zinc sheets, and began work on Monday, August 3rd.

Throughout the week, the site stayed busy, old, damaged roofing stripped away, worn supports replaced, and new zinc fitted section by section. By Saturday, August 8th, in just six days, the project was complete: a fully restored, weatherproof roof, ready to shelter the children who had waited far too long for it.

Representing the Bawa Foundation on the ground throughout were Gift Innocent, Admin Officer, and Obi Juwa, who worked closely with the contractor and the school’s leadership to monitor progress and see the project through to completion.

THE DIFFERENCE IT MADE

The transformation was immediate. Where children had once crowded into another building to escape a leaking, sun-scorched classroom, they could now return to a proper, secure learning space.

For the head teacher and principal, who had lived with the frustration of a deteriorating school for so long, the completion of the project brought visible relief. What had felt like an unsolvable problem was resolved in a single week, through the goodwill of people who had never even met the children they were helping.

The community chief received the finished project with deep gratitude, recognizing it as more than a repair, a statement that this community’s children, and their education, were worth investing in.

For the pupils themselves, the impact goes beyond the physical structure. A dry, shaded, properly roofed classroom means more days in school, more hours of uninterrupted learning, and a clear sign that their environment, and their future, is worth protecting.

BUILT TOGETHER

The Bmuko roofing project is a project about what happens when a need is seen and answered. From a torn, leaking roof that had come to symbolize years of neglect, to a completed, weatherproof classroom delivered in six days and under budget, it stands as proof of what focused effort, transparent partnership, and generous hearts can accomplish together.
